The defining concept of the omegaverse is a secondary sex system — a biological hierarchy that exists alongside primary sex (male/female) and independently of it. A male can be any dynamic; so can a female. Secondary sex manifests during or after puberty and is considered fixed (though some AUs allow dynamic suppression or rare shift). The three core dynamics are Alpha, Beta, and Omega — producing six sex combinations (male alpha, female alpha, male beta, female beta, male omega, female omega).

Alpha Traits

• Pheromones: Strong, often described as woodsy, smoky, or metallic. Function as a marker of dominance and can calm or attract omegas.
• Rut: Alpha equivalent of heat. Heightened aggression, territorial behavior, and sexual drive. Usually 3–7 days. Can often be controlled better than an omega's heat, especially with suppressants.
• Knot: A physical trait that swells during sex, locking alpha and partner together temporarily. Origin from canine biology. Varies widely in how authors handle it.
• Growl / Snarl: Alphas often have a vocal register that communicates dominance or warning. An alpha growl directed at an omega can trigger instinctive submission. Often used for humor or drama in fic.
• Pack bonding: In wolf-influenced AUs, alphas are natural pack leaders with strong loyalty instincts. Alpha-on-alpha conflict is common.

Beta Traits

• No heat/rut: The defining beta characteristic. They can work, travel, and socialize without biological disruption.
• Often invisible to plot: Because betas lack the dramatic biology that drives A/B/O plots, they often appear as side characters — friends, colleagues, confidants. This has been critiqued within fandom.
• Beta POV fic: A distinct niche of omegaverse fic written from a beta's perspective — watching alpha/omega drama from the outside, often as comic or affectionate commentary. Highly popular as a format for humor and warmth.
• Beta as rare neutral ground: In dystopian AUs, betas often occupy a social middle class — not oppressed like omegas, not privileged like alphas, sometimes resentful of both.

Omega Traits

• Heat: The defining omega experience. A biologically-driven mating cycle with physical and emotional intensity. Can be suppressed medically in modern AUs. See Cycles section below.
• Pheromones: Sweet, floral, or food-adjacent (vanilla, honey, peaches are common). During heat, pheromone output intensifies dramatically and can attract or affect nearby alphas involuntarily.
• Nesting: An instinctive drive to build a safe, soft, scent-rich space. Particularly strong before heat or pregnancy. Nesting fic is one of the softest and most beloved omegaverse sub-genres.
• Scent glands: Located at the neck (most commonly), wrists, or inner thigh. Used for scenting partners, marking territory, and expressing emotion. A well-scented partner "smells like safety."
• Male omega biology: The most variable element across fic. Commonly, male omegas have a functional uterus accessed via a secondary opening, self-lubricate during heat, and may develop breast tissue during pregnancy. Exact mechanics vary enormously by author.

The mating bond is one of the most narratively rich elements of the omegaverse, and also one of the most variable. In most common versions:

• The claiming bite is delivered by an alpha to an omega's scent gland (nape of neck most commonly) during sexual intercourse, ideally during heat. This creates a permanent chemical and emotional bond.
• Effects of bonding vary by author but often include: synchronized heat/rut cycles, partial emotional sharing (especially pain or distress), an ability to find each other by scent across distances, physical discomfort during extended separation.
• The bite scar remains permanently and carries the alpha's scent. Other dynamics can smell it — a marked omega is immediately identifiable as bonded.
• Breaking a bond — through death or forced methods — is treated as physiologically and psychologically traumatic. A major source of omegaverse angst.
• "True mates" — introduced ~2012 — adds a predestined element: some alpha/omega pairs are fated, recognizing each other by instinct upon first meeting. Resisting a true mate bond is a popular will-they-won't-they device.

The bite/bond framework draws partly from vampire and soulmate fan fiction traditions and is one of the more heavily debated elements — some readers find the physiological compulsion ethically troubling; others love it as a fantasy of irresistible romantic destiny.

• Alpha "guardianship" over unbonded omegas (especially in historical AUs)

• Alpha-only leadership roles in government, military, corporate settings
• Social attitudes that infantilize omegas or frame them as property
• Underground networks supporting omega rights, escape from forced bonds, or access to suppressants

This framework has made omegaverse a vehicle for examining real-world parallels: reproductive rights, disability rights (the omega's body as a disability/chronic condition), gender-based discrimination, bodily autonomy, and queer liberation — all mapped onto a fictional biology.

The single most important thing to understand about omegaverse is that there are no official rules. This is part of its appeal and its longevity. Common author variations include:
